A Parquet Dance Floor

Depending on what type of dance you are interested in teaching or learning, there are different types of dance floors which could be more beneficial to you than others. One of these types of dance floors which is favored by the ballroom dancing community is the parquet dance floor. This is a beautiful floor which quite closely resembles a hardwood dance floor upon first glance, though there are many differences between the two.

One of the main differences between a hardwood dance floor and a parquet dance floor is the surface, another reason that it is favored by ballroom dancers. A parquet dance floor has a very hard, durable surface, but it is much slicker and is more resistant to nicks and scratches than a hardwood floor. Dancing on a hardwood floor is very similar to dancing on the hardwood floor in your home except the dance floor would have a pad underneath. Any time that you use a sharp shoe, such as a tap shoe, the floor will receive scratches. Over time, those scratches can develop into grooves and nicks in the floor. The parquet flooring will not suffer these problems.

There is generally no padding underneath the parquet flooring, as it is normally used for ballroom dancing which, while extremely strenuous, is not quite as physically demanding as ballet or hip-hop dancing. It is more important the floor be unyielding and a mirror-like smooth surface in ballroom dancing rather than a forgiving hard surface.

Ballroom dancers cannot easily maneuver through their complicated dance steps on an uneven or pitted surface. That is why the hard, perfectly flat surface of a parquet floor is so desirable to them. Many ballroom dance movements require the dancers to be able to slide or turn easily in very high heeled shoes as well as maintain their balance with their partner. It is imperative that there be nothing for them to trip on, including tiny imperfections in the floor. With a parquet dance floor, the dancers have no concerns about how smooth the surface is.

It is also important to ballroom dancers that their dance floor be extremely stable. The give that is present in the hardwood floors would be detrimental to the performance of a ballroom dancer. A parquet dance floor is laid directly over the subflooring or base floor and so it has none of the give or spring of a regular dance floor. The intricacies of ballroom dance require the dancers to be able to dance in high, formal shoes as well as to balance in certain moves or positions. By not having spring in the flooring, the parquet floor helps them to maintain their balance and not cause harm to their shoes during intricate moves, protecting the dancers’ knees and ankles in the process.
